Reflecting on: DMAW’s Fundraising Fundamentals 101 and 201 & Nonprofit Fundraisers Symposium
Victoria Heckler, Vice President
This spring, one message has come through loud and clear: the fundraising landscape is changing faster than ever, and the organizations that will thrive are the ones willing to evolve with it.
I see the impact of this rapid change every day: Donor expectations are shifting. Channels are multiplying. Technology is advancing. And external forces—political upheaval, economic uncertainty, generational change, and information overload—are all influencing donor behavior.
Change can feel uncomfortable, but it also creates space for growth. Organizations that invest in integration, prioritize audience understanding, and embrace multichannel thinking are better equipped to meet the moment in our changing field.
Reflecting on: DMAW’s Sustainer Day
Tiffany Reed, Vice President
Sustainer Day is a Spring industry tradition here in DC, and this year’s all-day workshop did not disappoint. Some of the biggest brands in the non-profit space shared their best practices and learnings from new sustainer conversion and retention to upgrading and stewardship.
One powerful theme throughout the day was understanding the differences in sustainer behavior based on origin channel. For example, sustainers acquired through face-to-face programs will behave differently and should be treated differently than those acquired through digital channels or telemarketing.
With one in five donors now in a monthly donor relationship, and non-profits raising on average 18% of their annual revenue from sustainers, it was clear that organizations with an “always on” approach to sustainer conversion with sustainer-first contribution pages are reaping the benefits.
Reflecting on: Nonprofit Technology Conference
Wendy Marinaccio Husman, Vice President
In March, the Nonprofit Technology Conference in Detroit brought together more than a thousand people exploring how technology can help make the world a better place. What stood out most was the strength of the NTEN community: people committed to inclusion, equity, and actively doing good, not just mitigating harm.
At a time when conversations about AI, data, and digital strategy can feel overwhelming, NTC created space for honest discussion, shared learning, and collective problem-solving.
While many keynotes and breakout sessions explored AI’s impact on nonprofits, communities, and the environment, the biggest takeaway was less about any one tool and more about the relationships behind the work—something that can never be replicated or replaced.
MWD was proud to present one session in person and another virtually, and to co-host a celebration honoring our clients and the industry alongside other independently owned agencies and vendors. Most of all, we were grateful to spend time with current clients and partners—and to meet future collaborators.
The conference was a powerful reminder that real change happens when people come together, stay connected, and keep showing up—for the work and for one another.
